Vamana is one of the important procedures in Ayurveda Panchakarma Treatment. It is a procedure where toxins in the upper part of the body (till the diaphragm and respiratory tract)are removed by medicated emesis.

It is the emetic therapy done for expelling aggravated kapha dosha from the body through mouth by inducing medicines having emetic property vamanoushadhi. VIRECHANA

BASTI

Vasti (Basti) is the detoxification procedure in panchakarma treatment in which the medical decoctions is introduced through anus with the help of vasti yantra (instrument used for doing vasti). It is performed for eliminating aggravated vata dosha.

Vasti Treatment Classifications

Vasti treatments are classified based on the medicines used for the treatment. This is further differentiated with the quantity of the medicines used for the process. There is an additional classification made on the action like Niruha and Yapana Basti.

Vasti based on Ingredients used

The name Tikshna Vaitarana Vasti indicates that this treatment is conducted using Gomutra 500 ml for the process.

Vasti based on quantity of Ingredients

Vasti treatments can be segmented more with the ingredients used for the treatment. Ksheera vasti uses milk as the main ingredient in the treatment process with Vaitarana vasti containing milk about 1200 ml.

  • Anuvasana Vasti

The administered medicines stay for a longer duration inside the intestine , and do not cause any sorts of complication by aggravating any doshas. This vasti can be done on a daily basis.

    There are different types of Sneha vasti according to the quantity of medicine used for the procedure in Panchakarma therapy in Kerala.

  • Sneha Vasti- is one-fourth the quantity of Niruha Vasti –that is 300 ml ( 6 palas)
    Anuvasana Vasti –Half the quantity of sneha vasti, that is 150 ml (3 palas)
  • Matra Vasti

    The procedure in which, warm medicated oil is given through the anal route, to subside Vata. It also helps in treating conditions like Constipation, Low back pain, etc. This Ayurvedic enema can be done in all ages i.e. from childhood to old age, without any complications.

  • Matravasti is done usually with a quantity of sneha that is digested by 6 hours if taken orally.That is 60-90 ml.
  • Kashaya Vasti

    It is also called Niruha Vasti or Asthapana Basti. This Vasti is done with medicinal decoctions (kashaya) for eliminating aggravated doshas and diseases from the body. This therapy is done in empty stomach also done with the combination of Anuvasana Vasti in panchakarma therappy.

    Kashaya Vasti is one among the Panchkarama procedure in which warm medicated decoction is given through the anal route. The medicated decoction is made up of five herbal ingredients; Kashayavasti is indicated in all neurological diseases like hemiplegia, paraplegia, weight loss and certain arthritic conditions.

  • Uttara Vasti

    UttaraVasti is the procedure of administering vasti through vagina, uterine route, urinary route or through penis ( uttaramarga or linga marga). Uttaravasti focuses on maladies of the urinary and genital system. Beneficial for both male and females who suffer from infertility, genital infections etc.

    Female Uttara Vasti

    In Female, Uttara Vasti done through vagina or through urethral opening. In VAGINAL vasti is done either using sneha dravyas or kashaya dravyas but through intra urethral only. Sneha dravyas are used in order to avoid complications.

    Male Uttara Vasti

    Uttara Vasti in male is done by administering vasti through urinary route or through penis.

NASYAM

The procedure in which medicated oils or medicinal extracts are instilled through the nose is called Nasya. Nose is the gateway or entrance to the head ,so it is mainly done for the diseases of the head. Nasyam procedure in Ayurvedic Panchakarma treatment facilitates the Purification, nourishment, stimulation and strengthening. Nasyam directly influences the sense organs as the medicines get a good chance of absorption through blood vessels.

Types Of Nasyam

Prathi Marsha Nasya

It is pouring less dosage of medicine (2 drops) into each nostril and it can be done as a daily regimen and not based on particular disease ,is done for maintaining health .This type of nasya can be done at any age.

Virechana Nasyam

It is done for eliminating or cleansing excess Kapha . It is done by blowing dry powders or herbs into the nose.

Brahmana Nasyam

It is the nutritive nasya done by administering strengthening and tonifying substances like ghee ,oil ,medicated milk etc

Shamana Nasyam

It is the type of Nasya which does the alleviation of Dosha situated in the Head. It is mainly done using Medicated oils and decoctions.

Drava Nasya

Which is in liquid form

Kalka Nasya

Which is in paste form

Churna Nasya

Which is in powder form.

Nvana Nasya

Nvana Nasya is pouring of medicated oil according to PITTA-VATA or PITTA-KAPHA Disorders.

Avapeedana Nasya

It consists of the extract ( juice) of the ingredient drugs .This Nasya has a purifying effect . 4 ,6 ,8 drops of the juice is put on each nostril.

Pradhamana Nasya

It is done for the elimination of kapha dosha with dry powders which is administered into each nostrils using an instrument ( Nadi Yantra).

Dhuma Nasya

It is the medicated fume taken by nasal route and eliminated by oral route.

RAKTAMOKSHANA

Rakthamokshana is an effective procedure in panchakarma ayurveda treatments used for local detoxification by removing impure blood as in cases of eczema, acne, scabies, leucoderma, rash, metastatic, and non-metastatic tumours.

It is the purification therapy done by letting out impure or vitiated blood from the body for eliminating vitiated doshas and promoting detoxification. Mainly done for Pittaja and Raktaja diseases.

There are different types of Raktamokshana classified based on the medicines and procedures.

Shastra

Shstra is a category of Raktamokshana procedure by using sharp instruments. There are two types of Shastra Raktamokshana procedures named Siravedhana And Prachana used in panchakarma treatments in Kerala.

Siravedana Or Venesection

Siravedana is the letting out of circulating venous blood by tying a tourniquet above the particular area and and exerting a single stroke pressure on the tip of the blade which is placed on the respective vein.This is done for Sarvanga rakta dushti.

Prachana Karma

Prachana Karma is the type of Shastra Raktamokshana in which a sharp instrument like lancet or Trikurchaka is used to drain blood from an infected or non infected site.

AnuShastra

Anushastra Raktamokshana procedure is conducted by not using sharp instruments. 3 types of anussastra procedures are in use like Jaloukavacharanam, Alabu and Srunga Vicharanam.

Jaloukavacharanam

Jaloukavacharanam or Leech Therapy is used in Panchakarma treatment by applying non poisonous leeches for drawing impure blood from infected or non infected sites of the body. Procedure done for alleviating pitta rogas.

Alabu

Alabu is the procedure done using bitter (tikta) taste bottle gourd or pitcher gourd for sucking and extracting impure blood from the infected area.

Srungara Charanam

Srungara Charanam is the bloodletting therapy using cow's horn/ funnel or using vacuum apparatus.

Purvakarma Procedure

Purvakarma Procedure is an important process in every Ayurveda Panchakarma Treatment. It consists of some Pre operative Procedures ( Purvakarma ) such as Pachanam , Snehanam And Swedanam.

Pachanam

Pachanam is the administration of medicated powders or medicinal decoctions according to the condition of the patient in order to alleviate the amavastha (indigestion).It is done to make the patient fit for shodhana therapy. For example :Vaiswanara churnam , Ashta churnam, Panchakola churnam,chiruvilwadi kashayam,gandharvahastadi kashayam,amruthotharam kashayam etc.

Snehanam

The therapy which provides unctuousness(Snehanam),liquefaction (Vishyanda), softness (Manavatvam) and moistness ( Kledanatvam) to the body is called Snehana Karma. this is an important procedure in Panchakarma treatments.

Bahya Snehanam

Bahya Snehana is the procedure in ayurveda panchakarma in which external application of sneha dravyas (medicated oil). For example Abhyanga is an Oil massage therapy used for different indications. Lepa is just an oil application on the skin or on the body surface. Mardana is a procedure of hard massage using medicated oil. Parisheka is pouring medicated oil according to the treatment needs. Dharana is retention of medicine and Purana is filling of Medicine.
