Alopecia areata is a special type of hair loss disease. It is a non-scarring type but it can cause hair loss in any part of the body. This affects in different patterns. This condition is not so harmful to our body. But it can cause heavy mental stress and emotional distress. The hair follicle damage is caused by the abnormality in the immune system. This abnormality causes the autoimmunity, a misguided immune system that to destroy own body. The immune system attacks the hair follicles and damages normal hair formation. Alopecia areata is occasionally associated with other autoimmune conditions such as thyroid disease, vitiligo, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and ulcerative colitis. The diagnosis or treatment of these diseases is unlikely to affect the course of alopecia areata. Sometimes, alopecia areata occurs within family members, suggesting a role of genes.
